Technical knowledge does not limit creativity — it gives you freedom.
When you understand how a bag is constructed,
you can develop ideas that are both original and realistic for production.
Successful designers do not simply follow trends.
They learn how to recognize what is missing in the market and create solutions with flexible thinking.
In this course, you will learn how structure supports creativity
and helps transform ideas into professional designs.
👩🏫 Taught by Kazuyo Nakano
Fashion designer and educator with over 30 years of industry experience, specializing in handbag design,
product development, pattern development, and brand creation.
After gaining experience in factory-level production in Kyoto, she worked in pattern development,
sewing, and product assembly, developing a deep understanding of production processes.
She later launched her own brand in New York, developing products centered on
handbags as well as selected apparel pieces.
Through her brand, she gained hands-on experience in product planning, marketing,
pricing strategy, and sales within the fashion business.
Since 2017, Kazuyo has been working with CLO3D for digital product development,
and since 2018 she has been teaching digital development using CLO3D,
including 3D modeling and digital pattern development for both handbags and apparel.
Her students have gone on to work with global brands such as Nike and Burberry.

Design Development Process
1. Understand the fundamental bag structures
Understand the fundamental bag structures
Learn the seven basic structural forms that define handbag shapes and construction principles.
2, Develop design variations
Explore different design elements such as openings, bottoms, handles, hardware components, and construction details based on the structural forms.
3, Create a blueprint
Define the size and proportions of the bag by establishing the front, side, top, and bottom views.
The designer can also check the scale with an avatar at this stage to confirm the size and balance.
4, Develop the pattern
From the blueprint, create the fundamental pattern that defines the basic body structure of the bag. This pattern is then developed into the final pattern required to construct the bag.
5, Create the 3D model
Use digital tools to visualize the bag in 3D and finalize the design before presentation or production development.
* By using digital pattern tools such as CLO3D, designers can create patterns in the 2D workspace
while simultaneously visualizing the structure in 3D.
This allows designers to quickly verify proportions, scale, and functionality before moving to pattern refinement and production development.
